Besiktas coach Sergen Yalcin submitted his resignation following the team’s elimination from the Turkish Cup and subsequent fan protests, but club president Serdal Adali intervened to persuade him to stay.

The decision came after a disappointing performance against Konyaspor and mounting pressure from the stands. Yalcin reportedly cited squad limitations and criticism as reasons for his desire to step down.

Yalcin Expresses Frustration Over Squad Depth and Criticism

Following the cup exit, tensions ran high at Besiktas Park. Sergen Yalcin had previously voiced concerns about the team’s lack of depth, stating, “This is not an Anatolian team.” He presented his resignation to club officials in the locker room.

According to journalist Sercan Dikme, President Serdal Adali and other executives worked to convince the experienced coach to reconsider his decision.

The fan chants of “Sergen istifa” (Sergen resign) and objects thrown onto the field reportedly caused emotional distress for Yalcin. After the match, he met with his assistants and management to express his intention to leave.

However, President Serdal Adali and other club executives intervened, urging him to remain with the team. They emphasized that abandoning the team during this period would not be the right course of action and that they would overcome challenges together.

Yalcin, reflecting on the situation, stated, “There might have been a decline in performance. We don’t have much squad depth. We keep playing with the same players.” He also mentioned receiving backlash for attempting squad rotation in the Gaziantep match.

He added, “Unfortunately, there is a lot of criticism. I am trying to do my job in the best way possible. I am preparing the team, and we are dealing with transfers. Besiktas underwent a significant transformation in the mid-season. Such a transformation has never happened in history. It was a correct change, both financially and mentally.”

“The season will be a bit painful; we will not have an easy season. It is difficult to set a goal at this point. We expect things to improve over time,” he continued.

Yalcin also noted the improvements made with new signings during the mid-season break, stating, “Things improved over time. We brought in good players in the mid-season, and they made significant contributions. We reorganized the team, played well, and got results.”

He acknowledged the club’s historical ambition, saying, “We are far from our goal, but this is normal. I said from the beginning that we would not be close to our goal and that things would not be easy. Our fans naturally want short-term success. Short-term success is not easy.”

“This is not an Anatolian team; it is Besiktas. A big club, its goal is to win trophies, to be champions. A club that plays for those positions, but this year we are not in such a position, we did not have a squad to play for that,” Yalcin explained.

Yalcin Addresses Fan Protests and Future

Yalcin stated his respect for the fans’ reactions, saying, “The fans can chant ‘resign.’ It is their most natural right. It is very normal for me or the management to take responsibility for failure.”

He added, “There are 2 more matches left. It would not be right to leave the team two matches before the end. We have to play these two weeks if they allow us. It would be a shame if we left. We will make some evaluations during this period.”

“If our fans want me to leave, I will. There is no problem with that. They should have no doubts about it,” Yalcin concluded.

The coach also commented on the team’s cup elimination, stating, “We were eliminated from the Turkish Cup; it’s not the first time. This was not the championship match either.”

“Such results should be accepted naturally in football, but unfortunately, they are not accepted naturally here. We are sad. I understand the fans’ reaction as normal. The fans want to win the cup. We cannot always achieve what we want in life,” he said, expressing his dissatisfaction with the intensity of the reactions.
